BRATISLAVA, October 12, (WEBNOVINY) — Early elections next spring or early summer should be the solution to the current political crisis in Slovakia that resulted from failure of the Cabinet of Iveta Radicova on Tuesday night to win a parliamentary vote of confidence at the eurozone bailout fund extension. A Cabinet with limited powers should be led by the current Prime Minister Iveta Radicova until the early elections, according to SITA’s sources. This Cabinet is supposed to undergo a partial reshuffle. The strongest opposition party SMER-SD that abstained in the bailout vote to reveal the incapability of the coalition to rule would support proposals in parliament related to Slovakia’s EU and eurozone membership, which means that its MPs would raise their hands for the enhanced European Financial Stability Facility (EFSF) and the establishment of the permanent bailout fund. Both the coalition and the opposition rule out that a reconstructed cabinet composed of some ruling parties and an opposition party could be a cure to the crisis.
Chairman of the strongest ruling coalition party SDKU-DS Mikulas Dzurinda and opposition leader Robert Fico held talks in parliament at noon on how to solve the crisis and secure support the bailout fund. None of them informed the media after the talks. Prime Minister Iveta Radicova and chairmen of further two coalition parties, the KDH and MOST-HID authorized Dzurinda to instantly start negotiating with SMER-SD on the support to the enhanced bailout fund in a repeated parliamentary vote.
The Cabinet meets at 3 p.m. that is to decide also on repeated sending the resolution on ratification of the bailout fund to parliament. Parliamentary committees and the plenum will discuss he bailout fund already on Thursday.
