MODRA, January 15, (WEBNOVINY) – Taxation of people is the key matter which divides the SDKU-DS party and the opposition SMER-SD and it is also what early parliamentary elections will be about, according to SDKU-DS Chairman Mikulas Dzurinda. Dzurinda mentioned the main difference in the opening speech of the SDKU-DS Central Council meeting in Modra on Sunday, where delegates are to approve the election program. According to Dzurinda, SMER seeks only short-term solutions and is therefore opening the topic of progressive taxation. SDKU-DS considers it inevitable to preserve the flat-rate income tax and a flexible Labor Code, while canceling the flat-rate income tax would be an attack on the middle class, Dzurinda noted.
The SDKU-DS Chairman considers it a moral duty to insist on appointing Jozef Centes to the post of Prosecutor General. “We do not understand why the Slovak President ignores a legitimate decision of the Parliament,” he said, adding that all parliamentary parties, including SMER should adopt such position. “I believe that when SMER joins us in our demand, Mr. President will appoint Centes – so will SMER join us?,” the party leader asked.
In the economic sphere, SDKU-DS wants to champion Slovakia’s membership in the eurozone or in a club of the best countries. “Let the name be anything in the future, Slovakia has to be a member of such club,” he said.
Prime Minister Iveta Radicova did not come to the central council session. After her government collapsed in October 2011, she announced her intention to leave politics, but will hold the post of SDKU-DS deputy leader until the party congress that should be held after the parliamentary elections.
