BRATISLAVA, October 17, (WEBNOVINY) — On Monday, President Ivan Gasparovic signed into law the constitutional bill from October 13 of this year on shortening the election term for the Slovak Parliament, informed presidential spokesman Marek Trubac.

Based on the law, early parliamentary elections will take place on March 10, 2012. The parliament decided to shorten its election period last week, when 143 lawmakers of the 150-seat house voted to approve the constitutional bill on shortening the election period. Three ruling coalition parties and the opposition SMER-SD agreed to announce early elections on March 10 after parliament initially failed on Tuesday to approve the enhanced European bailout fund in the vote merged with a confidence vote in the Iveta Radicova Cabinet, meaning that it failed to win lawmakers‘ confidence. The elections in 2012 will be the third early elections e in the history of the sovereign Slovak Republic. The first early elections were held here in 1994; the second in 2006.
