BRATISLAVA, July 17, (WEBNOVINY)- The adoption of the Declaration on Sovereignty of the Slovak Republic twenty years ago belongs among the most important moments forming the contemporary history of Slovakia that we should nor forget about, reads a statement of Slovak President Ivan Gasparovic addressing the anniversary of the document. The statement provided by the press department of the Presidential Office maintains that Slovaks who as a nation had always been submitted to somebody or were with somebody for twelve centuries managed to express their longing for a state by this document on July 17, 1992. The creation of an independent republic and its so far development are evidence that the declaration on sovereignty was adopted based on the will of the people, suggests the statement.

“The Slovak Republic will commemorate soon the 20th anniversary of its independent existence. As the president and a citizen I am proud of achievements of the young state over two decades. By being members of the EU and NATO and all important global organizations Slovakia and its citizens have confirmed that we belong by right in a modern democratic society,” thinks Gasparovic.

The Slovak Parliament’s Declaration of Independence of the Slovak Nation was a a parliamentary resolution adopted on 17 July 1992, by which MPs demanded Slovakia’s independence. This event was part of a process that finished with a peaceful split of the Czech and Slovak Federal Republic and the rise of an independent Slovakia on 1 January 1993.
