BRATISLAVA, April 18, (WEBNOVINY) — The Cabinet is considering creating the post of an appointee for minorities and culture. The ruling coalition left the post of Deputy prime minister for minorities vacant and after the change of the competence law the future Deputy Prime Minister Lubomir Vazny should have on his agenda large infrastructure projects and not minorities.
“We want a person at the government level who will safeguard issues around national minorities – therefore I can say that we will embark on this path,” said Prime Minister Robert Fico on Wednesday.
The establishment of the new office of plenipotentiary for minorities should not mean automatically the scrapping of the post of the Cabinet plenipotentiary for Roma Communities currently performed by Miroslav Pollak. The office of the plenipotentiary including the Bratislava headquarters should be moved to eastern Slovakia. “We want to relocate the whole office from Bratislava to a locality that is most sensitive in the given relations and the Roma issue,” said Fico. He has already discussed the matter with town fathers in Spisska Nova Ves. He opines that the office might have more effective communication with mayors there than from the capital.
