BRATISLAVA, May 4, (WEBNOVINY) — Slovak Interior Minister Daniel Lipsic agrees that in certain situations, the Schengen system may have to be tightened. “Some countries make decisions that defy solidarity and enable illegal economic migrants to move freely throughout the whole European Union – and they transfer their own problems to other EU states, as did Italy,” Lipsic told reporters this Wednesday.
The European Commission has proposed reinstating border controls in special cases, even though building “a continent without borders” is considered a significant goal of the EU. The European Commission made this proposal after France and Italy insisted on revising the Schengen system, which allows not only EU member state citizens but also illegal migrants to travel freely. EU Commissioner for Home Affairs Cecilia Malmstrom said that “it probably will be necessary to consider re-introducing some limited internal border checks,” as thousands of north African migrants enter Italy illegally and then migrate throughout Europe.
