BRATISLAVA, August 15, (WEBNOVINY) — The Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute (SHMU) issued a third-degree flood alert connected with storms for the region of Upper Nitra until 7 p.m. A second-degree of flood alert concerns the Upper Povazie and Liptov regions. The first-degree flood alert applies to the regions of Lower Nitra, Lower Hron, Ipel and Slana.
On Sunday, local floods caused by a storm lasting several hours hit the towns of Handlova and Prievidza, as the river level rose. One street and an illegal Roma settlement in the town of Ziar nad Hronom have been flooded, too.
The flood alert of the third degree means that flooding may seriously endanger human activities and cause damages of large extent. It is quite rare. The lowest level of flood warning (first degree) means that floods may pose a small danger to human activities and relatively small damages. It usually occurs several times a year.
