BRATISLAVA, November 13, (WEBNOVINY) – Chairman of the KDH party Jan Figel did not explicitly rule out cooperation with the SMER-SD party in Sunday’s political debate program Na Telo of TV Markiza. In response to the question of whether KDH would form a governing coalition with SMER-SD if the party gave a written guarantee that it would respect agreed-upon rules, Figel said: “If we do not find a sufficient solution in the center-right alternative, parties that call themselves responsible should look for a solution in the form of a balanced wider coalition,” Figel said. He added that KDH insists that its political partner fight against corruption and for transparency, push for thorough justice with enforceability of the law, sustainable and not overpriced public investments, as well as recovery of the health care system.

“After March, there must be a single alternative for Slovakia, which in reality will mean a strong stable government that will represent Slovakia well and will renew economic growth,” SMER-SD Deputy Chairman Robert Kalinak reacted by saying.

The deputy leader of the strongest opposition party criticized Ivan Miklos (SDKU-DS). He likened him to accountant Fantozzi, who does nothing but announce the current volume of deficit to the public. In response to the question of whether KDH and SMER-SD will have the courage to present belt-tightening proposals in their election campaigns, Figel said that Slovakia has four months until the elections, during which recovery and serious measures can still be implemented. He believes the parliament can still adopt the state budget draft for next year and avoid using a provisional budget. The budget should be based on lower revenues, as there is a risk of a recession, the KDH leader pointed out. “I am convinced that some proposals need to be withdrawn from the table, such as scrapping health insurance contributions for the voluntarily unemployed, which is an interference into the health care system as well as the state budget,” Figel said. SMER-SD sees a solution in a higher taxation of banks, monopolies, and rich people.
