BRATISLAVA, October 13, (WEBNOVINY) — On Wednesday morning, Justice Minister Lucia Zitnanska dismissed Tibor Sotak form the post of Director at Presov Correctional Institution in connection with the case of inmate Lubos Kracunik, whose permitted leave evolved into an escape attempt with sexual violence. “In the case in the Presov prison, also individual failures and mistakes were committed,” the justice minister told the press. According to a report of the committee that investigated the case, the prisoner was given three permits to leave the institution in the course of less than five months, which was a violation of the law. She personally regrets that the prison was very slow to react to the fact that Kracunik violated terms of the extraordinary leave. She emphasized that the action that followed, including involving the police, convening a crisis team, etc., was conducted with a considerable delay. Director General of the Correctional and Courtroom Security Corps Robert Mudroncek is assessing the responsibility of other employees of the facility for the case.
Mudroncek issued an instruction for all directors of correctional institutions in Slovakia to stop all permissions to leave the institution to the sentenced last week. New, stricter rules for rewarding inmates by awarding them permits to leave should be issued by the end of this week.
Former police officer Lubos Kracunik was reportedly convicted six times for violent crimes; he was currently serving a 10.5-year sentence for robbery and sexual violence. It is not known whether the court ordered treatment of his sexual disorder. He received a permission to leave the institution in Presov for October 1-4, but he did not return to the prison. In Roznava, he raped a 14-year-old-girl and also committed a sexual violence on a receptionist in a hotel. Police caught him hiding in the bushes following a tip-off.
