BRATISLAVA, May 11, (WEBNOVINY) — Interior Minister Daniel Lipsic still hopes to enact stricter provision of the requirement of psychological tests for owners of firearms in the gun law . “If there was the slightest chance that the law could be made stricter in parliament, I would submit that proposal,” he stated Wednesday after the regular Cabinet session.
In Minister Lipsic’s opinion, the Tuesday shooting in Kysak, which occurred when police tried to arrest a man suspected of planning to murder a Swiss man and eat him, proves that there are some who hold gun licenses who should never have received them. The suspect, who seriously injured a police officer, was the member of a gun club and an owner of licenses for four guns. “That is why it is crucial that we have introduced obligatory psychological tests,” said Lipsic, adding that he wanted regular tests for holders of licenses, but in the end there will be only one, which he considers better than nothing. “Our rules have been too liberal, which poses a risk to lives, just as it threatened the life of the intervening police officer,” he stated. The minister also informed about the health status of the injured member of the police SWAT team, who has undergone surgery and is still in critical condition.
Slovak police received information about the planned crime in advance. A man from Switzerland wanted to die and be eaten by a cannibal, who was looking for clients on the Internet. The man agreed to meet the suspect in Kysak. However, when Slovak police learned of the plan, they substituted the Swiss man, who had changed his mind, with a police agent. The shooting occurred when the police SWAT team attempted to arrest the man; the suspect drew a gun and was shot, after which the suspect returned fire, wounding one of the police officers.
The investigation is led by the Office for Fight Against Organized Crime under the supervision of the Special Prosecutor’s Office. House searches and other police investigative steps are currently being carried out. The suspect was charged with conspiracy to commit murder as well as attempted murder of the police officer.
