BRATISLAVA, October 29, (WEBNOVINY)- The leader of the strongest coalition party SDKU-DS Mikulas Dzurinda and opposition leader Robert Fico who stands at the helm of the strongest party in Slovakia, SMER-SD met in the first duel ahead of the March 10 early elections on Slovak Radio on Saturday. Fico says that there will be only two alternatives in Slovakia following early elections. “Do not form governments, the outcome is clear; either a rightist conglomerate or certainty,” he stated. Dzurinda objected to using the term ‚conglomerate‘ in association with the rightist government. He asked Fico to rather use the term ‚rightist coalition‘ reminding him of the fact that also Fico led a conglomerate with Meciar and Slota while SMER has in its ranks also ex-members of the HZDS and the already non-existent political parties Slovak Association of Workers, SDL or SDA.
Fico underscored that the SDKU-DS made the situation slightly easier when it stated that neither after early elections it will be in one government with SMER, just as it is anchored in its general line approved by the last elections. „One alternative is that the election winner will form the government of the Slovak Republic and it will be a stable strong government, a government that we need in these hard times. Or there exists a second alternative of several political parties, often small ones from various factions,“ said Fico. According to him voters will have an easy task in March. “Voters will decide on whether they want stability or chaos while, unfortunately we had been witnesses only to chaos for fifteen months,’ he said.
Dzurinda reacted that Fico would now try to convince people that only a one-party government can be a stable government. . He added that it is not a less attractive option for the citizens to have a coalition of equal partners whose members control each other and are able to strike an accord on a political program.
