BRATISLAVA, February 8, (WEBNOVINY) – Former director general of Slovak Radio and the acting head of the newly merged broadcaster Slovak Radio and Television (RTVS) Miloslava Zemkova fulfills the criteria for the post of the RTVS director general the best, according to Culture Minister Daniel Krajcer (SaS). “It is a candidate who already in the past showed that while managing the Slovak Radio she can resist political pressure and at the same time as a manager is able to successfully manage this institution with a balanced budget,” the minister told journalists after meeting representatives of coalition deputy factions in Parliament Tuesday. Krajcer added that the ruling coalition has not yet agreed upon a common candidate for the RTVS head.
Member of the Parliamentary Committee for Media and Culture Tomas Galbavy (SDKU-DS) also prefers Zemkova for the post of RTVS director and stated that he would personally recommend her to his caucus. In his opinion, Zemkova fulfills not only the qualitative criteria but character requirements as well; moreover she has results on her record. Galbavy also underscored that in the final phase, every deputy will be able to decide freely and no pressure will be exerted on anyone. According to Galbavy, no representative of the ruling coalition supported any other candidate at the meeting with the culture minister. “We agreed that there were several quality candidates, but they were a step behind Zemkova,” he explained.
Opposition deputy and head of the Parliamentary Committee for Media and Culture Dusan Jarjabek (SMER-SD), criticized the minister for his comments about Zemkova as in his opinion they suggest suspicion of abuse of powers. He also opined that it is not fair to the other candidates. The strongest opposition party SMER-SD will not make the name of their candidate public, claims Jarjabek, adding that they have not picked a candidate yet.
