BRATISLAVA, December 19, (WEBNOVINY) — Lubomir Andrassy, spokesman for the Mayor of Bratislava says that the city does not rule out that the cost overrun at the reconstruction of the ice hockey stadium for the IIHF World Championship 2011 in Bratislava could result in criminal charges.

The city already received the results of an audit carried out by the Supreme Audit Office (NKU), which showed that the reconstruction of the Ondrej Nepela Ice Hockey Stadium cost almost twice the originally planned amount. According to Andrassy, the city requested the position of its legal department and of the Bratislava General Investor (GIB).

In case that Mayor Milan Ftacnik reaches the conclusion that the former GIB management exceeded its powers and violated the law, he is ready to press criminal charges. As Andrassy further informed, the current city hall administration asked the Supreme Audit Office to audit the reconstruction due to doubts on whether the funds used for the reconstruction were used efficiently. He said that Ftacnik plans to inform on the results of the audit at this Tuesday’s briefing and will submit a report on it to members of the Municipal Council at its next session.

As the Hospodarske Noviny daily informed, the audit has shown that reconstruction of the Ondrej Nepela Ice Hockey Stadium cost almost twice the originally planned costs and the funds were used inefficiently: it cost 96 million euro which was 90.6 percent more than originally planned. According to the Supreme Audit Office, both the project engineer and construction company were chosen contrary to the law on public procurement and the former town administration together with GIB spent the funds in a questionable way.
