BRATISLAVA, November 22, (WEBNOVINY) – Jozef Centes is the joint candidate of the ruling coalition for the Prosecutor General post. Prime Minister Iveta Radicova informed after the Coalition Council held on Monday that “this is the accord of all coalition parties and all chairmen of coalition deputy clubs are going to submit this proposal”. Centes has been serving as a prosecutor since 1992. Radicova opines that Centes was the best choice of all nominees for the post since he fulfills the condition of moral integrity. Centes has been recently appointed a member of the Cabinet’s Legislative Council.

The talks were not easy and the agreement is a fair compromise, commented Chairman of the KDH deputy caucus Pavol Hrusovsky. MPs of MOST-HID will unanimously vote for him, confirmed head of their club Laszlo Solymos. Also chairman of the SDKU-DS parliamentary club Jozef Mikus assured that the party will support the selected nominee.

The Coalition Council met on Monday morning to pick a candidate for the post of prosecutor general for the next seven-year term. The session has been interrupted after two hours until the afternoon.

The Parliament will hold a secret ballot to elect Slovakia’s prosecutor general for the next seven-year period on December 2, at 11.30 a.m. Parliamentary deputies had until Monday, 6 p.m. to submit candidates for the new prosecutor general. SMER-SD MP Mojmir Mamojka has again proposed the incumbent Prosecutor General Dobroslav Trnka to the post. Trnka’s term in office expires in February 2011.

The ruling coalition suffered a fiasco in the prosecutor general election in early November as the SDKU-DS refused to support the joint candidate on whom its three partners in the ruling coalition agreed. In the election in parliament, Eva Misikova, a candidate supported by SaS, KDH and MOST-HID received 49 votes; incumbent Prosecutor General Dobroslav Trnka, nominated by both Stanislav Janis (SDKU-DS) and Mojmir Mamojka (SMER-SD) received 70 votes. Jan Hrivnak, nominated by SDKU-DS MP Jana Dubovcova, received 28 votes, from all SDKU-DS MPs. Two nominees with highest number of votes move to the second round, as none received more than fifty percent of votes of MPs present. SDKU Deputy Chairwoman and Prime Minister Iveta Radicova said the office needs new blood. She even hinted that if Trnka was reelected, she would consider a resignation. A majority of the ruling coalition thinks that Trnka did not handle politically sensitive cases, though his office was doing well in fighting organized crime.
