BRATISLAVA, April 16, (WEBNOVINY) — Prime Minister Robert Fico said on Monday that the government has an unfulfilled task, which is to the correct law on citizenship so that it does not damage citizens of Slovakia who apply for citizenship of some other country and then as a result of the law lose their Slovak citizenship. As the prime minister pointed out at a news conference after he introduced into office the Minister of Culture Marek Madaric and State Secretary Ivan Secik, „of course, this law must continue to apply in relation to the Republic of Hungary, because there the law is still in force, to which we responded with this legislation.“

The Ministry of Culture will maintain the current status quo in the area of national minorities, reiterated the SMER-SD party leader and Prime Minister Robert Fico. „And although in some municipalities we could proceed with changes, we will not do so,“ he noted in particular with regard to the results of last year’s census, according to which in some municipalities the percentage of ethnic minorities there decreased. According to Fico, his government plans to establish a Representative Office for National Minorities. „It will be a representative of the government of the Slovak Republic who would primarily focus on these issues, but in terms of executive performance, that will fall under the Ministry of Culture,“ he explained the plan.

In the relationship between the state and churches, the government wants to maintain balance. Whatever happens in this area can only be based on an agreement, Prime Minister Fico added.
