BRATISLAVA, May 2, (WEBNOVINY) — Josef Magala should be the new director of the National Security Office (NBU). The Cabinet agreed on the nomination on Wednesday. However, the nomination still needs to be approved by the Slovak Parliament. Magala should replace Frantisek Blanarik, a LS-HZDS nominee, who resigned long ago, but remained in office as the former coalition government was unable to agree on his replacement during its term.
Although they agreed that the SaS (Freedom and Solidarity) party has the right to nominate the new NBU chief, objections were raised against a number of its candidates. When the former coalition agreed to accept the nomination Kamil Krnac, parliament was unable to elect his due to disintegration of the ruling coalition in October 2011.
During the first term of Robert Fico’s coalition government in the years 2006-2010, Magala headed the Slovak intelligence service SIS.
