BRATISLAVA, October 5, (WEBNOVINY) — Retail sales in Slovakia continued their downward trend over August. Following a y/y drop by 1.6 percent in the previous month, they were 1.8 percent lower y/y in August. According to data from the Statistics Office of the Slovak Republic, retail sales in August totaled EUR 1.492 billion. In contrast, sales in wholesale trade, grew by 6.9 percent over August to EUR 1.978 billion. In July, they dropped 0.8 percent.
The largest y/y decline in retail sales was in retail of food, beverages, and tobacco in specialized outlets, by 13.6 percent. Sales increased most considerably in retail sale of ITC equipment, namely by 3.1 percent. Overall, for the first eight months of this year, retail sales in Slovakia fell by 2 percent to EUR 11.085 billion.
In wholesale sales in August, the largest increase was in wholesale of ITC equipment by 56 percent and in miscellaneous specialized wholesale by 21.1 percent. In wholesale of goods for households a 8.8-percent growth was reported. Sales went down in wholesale intermediation by 15.6 percent, in non-specialized wholesale by 3.2 percent and in wholesale of food, beverages, and tobacco by 2 percent. For eight months of 2010, wholesale sales rose by 3.3 percent year-on-year to EUR 15.188 billion.
