BRATISLAVA, December 9, (WEBNOVINY) — The Slovak Syndicate of Journalists (SSN) is watching with concern the increasing number of attacks against the WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange. These attacks prove that the right to information is not granted, there still remains a need to fight for it. With this statement, the Slovak Syndicate of Journalists as the largest organization representing the journalist profession in Slovakia has joined the International Federation of Journalist and the Reporters Without Borders. According to SSN, the right to control the authorities is a duty of the media, the SSN Executive Board says.
Assange turned himself in to the police in London on Tuesday, in response to an international warrant issued by Interpol. This was based on a Swedish warrant issued after Assange was accused of rape and sexual harassment.
The WikiLeaks Internet portal, which Assange founded in 2006, published hundreds of thousands of secret US documents. In October, documents on the war in Iraq and Afghanistan were leaked, since November documents of US diplomats are being published. These are mostly memos and dispatches from US embassies, which caused excitement and uproar through the world.
