BRATISLAVA, March 1, (WEBNOVINY) — Slovak Prime Minister Iveta Radicova thinks that an unscheduled summit of European leaders over the situation in Libya is necessary. “The summit is crucial and it is no longer only the situation in Libya that must be dealt with but also the issue of the Arab world in general. It is a serious matter,“ Radicova told SITA on Tuesday. She said that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had already repeatedly expressed Slovakia’s stance on development in Libya. “Slovakia was among the first countries that called for very resolute and unequivocal steps against Libya,“ claims the Prime Minister. “The anger that is now being directed at dictators is justified but also very dangerous and measures should not escalate the whole situation. However, it has to be clear that any kind of dictatorship in today’s world are unacceptable,“ she concluded.
British Prime Minister David Cameron and French President Nicolas Sarkozy proposed convening an unscheduled EU summit on Monday to discuss further steps against the regime of Libyan leader Muammar Kaddafi. Cameron’s office stated that he and Sarkozy agreed during a phone discussion that the international response to the crisis in Libya was prompt and appropriate. They settled that important changes in “EU’s approach to this region“ should prompt a meeting of the Council of the European Union so that it can “discuss further steps of the European Union. “Sarkozy’s office also confirmed that leaders of EU member states have to meet as soon as possible and informed that Cameron and Sarkozy were planning to address EU President Herman Van Rompuy regarding this matter.
Member countries of the European Union agreed on sanctions against Libya on Friday. The measures should also include an arms embargo and restricted traveling as well as freezing assets of Libyan representatives. UN Security Council has also passed similar sanctions.
