BRATISLAVA, June 14, (WEBNOVINY) — Justice Minister Lucia Zitnanska has filed an extraordinary appeal against the decision of the Bratislava Regional Court handed down in the case of alleged gangland boss Karol Mello. She suggests that the Supreme Court of the Slovak Republic revoke the verdict of the Regional Court. The minister filed the extraordinary appeal based on the initiative of the Prosecutor General’s Office, after having evaluated the information in the respective case file.
The release of Karol Mello from pretrial custody shortly after his extradition from Poland, where the police detained him after he was on the run for four years, earned harsh reactions in the media and critical words from Interior Minister Daniel Lipsic, who called the court’s decision a blow to justice. Karol Mello was charged with ordering a murder, which claimed the lives of a woman and a child instead of the targeted person. Based on the decision of the Bratislava Regional Court, he was freed from custody on May 19 for alleged procedural flaws associated with his extradition from Poland and subsequent detention in Slovakia.
