BRATISLAVA, July 27, (WEBNOVINY) — Michal Kovac (79), the first President of the Slovak Republic (1993-1998), ended up at the First Neurological Clinic in the Bratislava district of Kramare after having a second breakdown this month. It is not clear how long he will stay there, spokeswoman for the University Hospital Rut Gerzova told SITA news agency. “I can confirm that he is in our hospital. We do not provide information about his health condition,” Ms. Gerzova noted.
Mr. Kovac, who has been in hospital for three weeks in a row, is not feeling well. “I had a minor injury in the hospital; I fell,” he told SITA on Tuesday. He remarked that his condition could have been much better without this inconvenience, but he would not provide more information about his medical condition, adding that expert information related to his health should be provided by doctors.
Mr. Kovac ended up at the military hospital on Monday, July 12 and was convinced his stay was caused by temporary nausea connected with extremely hot weather and stress. The president fainted shortly before 11 A.M. while entering the offices of the Emilia Kovacova Foundation on Sturova Street in Bratislava. The security guard who caught him as he fainted called the medical emergency service. During his stay in the hospital, some new complications occurred; according to information in the media, he collapsed again at Thursday’s night.
Michal Kovac was born on August 5, 1930 in Lubisa, Humenne district. As a candidate of the Movement for a Democratic Slovakia (HZDS), Slovak Parliament elected him as the first President of the Slovak Republic on February 15, 1993. His inauguration took place on March 2, 1993 in Bratislava. His term ended on March 3, 1998 when presidential powers were taken over by Vladimir Meciar and his Cabinet until the next president was elected.
