BRATISLAVA, February 7, (WEBNOVINY) – SDKU-DS Chairman Mikulas Dzurinda would not mind if KDH’s Chairman Jan Figel organized a meeting of right-wing parties’ leaders shortly, Dzurinda told a news conference on Tuesday. “If Figel feels as leader of the right, I’d be very glad when he starts organizing us,” told Dzurinda the reporters. He said he signs a blank cheque that he would very gladly and promptly attend such meeting while adjusting or canceling his work schedule.
According to Dzurinda and his colleagues a meeting of right-wing parties would enable them to sit down together with representatives of other center-right parties and discuss whether they view things in the same manner as SDKU-DS which perceives the possibility of the election resulting in a government comprised solely of SMER-SD, or of SMER-SD in coalition with nationalist SNS, as the biggest threat. “Nowadays we consider it essential to put ourselves together, that we, center-right parties, would finally start doing something to prevent the threat of one-colored SMER government,” said SDKU-DS Deputy Chairman Ivan Miklos. Justice Minister Lucia Zitnanska is convinced that those, who do not vote in the election, in fact do vote for Robert Fico.
Dzurinda, however, is not convinced that right-wing parties should sign a contract on future cooperation prior to the election. “I don’t consider this realistic. Figel is right that you can put a lot of things down on paper, but this does not need to resolve anything,” said SDKU leader. He mentioned the coalition treaty signed after 2010 election as an example: it only lasted a little over a year. “I’m not interested in taking written obligations and there’s not even time for that,” explained Dzurinda. He is also convinced that “sentiments and personal psychological barriers” should be put aside for now. SDKU-DS representatives also said that future cooperation with liberal SaS would be possible, but the Liberals’ attitudes towards future EU actions would be important. Dzurinda also mentioned the case of the Netherlands where one coalition party opposes the European Stability Mechanism but an agreement with the opposition, making adopting the stability tool possible, exists.
SDKU-DS head was not very keen to comment on the slate of Igor Matovic’s Ordinary People and Independent Personalities which faces a danger of falling apart soon. “I’m not very happy that there are friction in a center-right political party or in this part of the political spectrum,” said Dzurinda. He considers it to be politically relevant that they could outnumber SMER, currently dominating the polls, together with other parties right from the center. He enclosed that the situation could be overturned if the right cooperated better instead of attacking each other.
