BRATISLAVA, July 23, (WEBNOVINY) — The largest local construction company, Doprastav, a.s., has announced to the Labor Office in Bratislava its plans for collective layoffs of 750 employees because of a shortage of new contracts and continued unfavorable market development in the construction sector. Director General of the company Dusan Samudovsky confirmed this information for SITA news agency on Friday. He specified that they would lay off the employees gradually from the middle of August until the end of 2010. Doprastav now has more than three thousand employees, which means it reduces its work force by about a quarter.
Among the laid off employees will be about six hundred construction workers from the area of Bratislava, Zilina, and Zvolen. Mr. Samudovsky identified as the main reason for the job cuts the fact that the first package of public-private projects for construction and operation of five stretches of the D1 highway between Martin and Presov had not been financially closed yet. „We cannot hold on to employees for whom we have no work,“ he said and added that other firms in the sector can also be expected to get rid of their excessive staff.
Another leading company on the local market, Vahostav-SK, a.s. Zilina announced on Thursday it would lay off five hundred employees, which is about a quarter of its work force. The collective layoff, planned from August 8 to January 31 of 2011, will affect blue-collar workers as well as white-collar employees in charge of technical and administrative issues, informed the assistant to the company director general and CEO Andrej Thiel.
