New York 80. rokov bol celkom odlišný od New Yorku súčasnosti.

Hoci sa nikdy oficiálne do New Yorku nepresťahovala, absolvovala niekoľko výletov s touto cieľovou destináciou.

Delaney začala New York navštevovať v podobe jednotýždňových výletov v polovici 80. rokov.

Delaney started taking one week trips to new york in the mid 1980s.jpg

„Keď som navštívila New York počas týchto rokov, 1984 až 1987, mala som z fotografovania radosť, pretože som toto miesto milovala,“ povedala pre Business Insider.

When i visited new york during these years 1984 to 1987 i was happily taking photographs because i was in love with the place she told business insider.jpg

During one trip while she was staying at a friends loft she came back at 3 in the morning and realized she had forgotten the key.jpg

She decided to spend the rest of the night drifting around lower manhattan.jpg

Na svitaní nastúpila na trajekt na Staten Island (a naspäť), aby zabila čas.

Once dawn hit that day she took the staten island ferry back and forth to kill time.jpg

Túto snímku urobila počas jazdy na trajekte. Slovo „american“ v kompozícii fotografie pôsobí celkom prirodzene.

She took this shot during the ferry ride even managing to capture the word american in the frame naturally.jpg

Of this couple onboard she said they never acknowledged me they were so lost in each other i was the only other person on the bow of the ferry but we never spoke.jpg

Spomínanou priateľkou, u ktorej prebývala, bola Barbara Mensch – fotografka, ktorá mala štúdio neďaleko Brooklynského mosta a South Street Seaport.

The aforementioned friend she was staying with was barbara mensch another photographer who had a studio by the brooklyn bridge and south street seaport.jpg

As delaney was photographing she focused on the idea of how a city goes through changes over time.jpg

V tom istom období, v ktorom robila tieto fotografie v New Yorku, dokončovala projekt venovaný demografickým zmenám v meste San Francisco.

At the same time she was taking these photos in new york delaney was finishing up a project in san francisco about the changing demographics of that city.jpg

The photos are not just about delaneys eye and what she saw but also a way of examining how different types of people were represented or seen in society at the time.jpg
Janet Delaney

S ľuďmi, ktorých videla, robila akoby interview, mieniac tým to, že jej fotografie môžu byť vnímané ako výtvarné umenie a zároveň vizuálny spoločenský dokument.

She also did interviews with the people she saw meaning that her photos can be seen as fine art and social documentation.jpg

One thing she looks back on now and realizes she didnt appreciate as much at the time was how unique small businesses were before manhattan filled up with chain stores.jpg

K New Yorku ju to vždy ťahalo. A deje sa tak stále.

This really homogenized the experience on the street delaney said and as the cost of living in manhattan rose it seemed the place became a bit more predictable.jpg

But she has not photographed it in the same way since this project from the 80s.jpg

Her work has made an artistic and social statement that has stood the test of time.jpg
